UIL Solo/Ensemble Contest Approaches
Greetings, everyone! I hope your Spring semester is off to a great start.
UIL Solo/Ensemble Contests are quickly approaching. Today was Tomorrow is [oops] the deadline for West Zone, in fact. While this is a UIL event rather than TMEA, I would like to offer some reminders…
- Entry fees are $8 per student.
- Entries are processed through the www.uilforms.com website.
- Form 1A must be postmarked by the deadline. The form is on the Region 7 UIL Music site – [http://uilforms.com/regions/7].
- The Form 1A can also be used as backup for your entry check (which is supposed to be mailed as well).
- To make the schedule, the contest host needs to know…
- How many accompanists and students per accompanist
- If you have specific time needs
Clinic – important reminder
I always thinks this goes without saying, but it probably bears repeating.
Directors with students involved in the clinic & concert are required to be present at Weatherford HS all day.
Correction to prior post’s attachment
Oops! I accidentally attached last year’s Clinic Info file for printing. I have corrected it on that post, and here it is as well. The correct file should not have a judge list and should have a map.

Some important reminders:
- Be on time! With choirs this large, it is vital that we maximize the rehearsal time for the clinicians. Plan ahead. Arrive early. Make sure students understand the need for alacrity. Make smart choices for lunch and dinner.
- District choir will need a couple of soloists. The top 4 chairs can audition if they choose.
- Make sure your students have…
- all the music they need (originals)
- black folder (with no other music or papers cluttering it)
- pencil(s)
- a positive attitude and flexible approach
- looked at the new music
- concert attire – choir uniform (proper shoes included)
- See information 2 post for schedule
- Space is limited, so changing clothes off-site for dinner is preferable. If students must change at the school, then arrive early enough so they can be on time to warm up.
- Directors will meet in the afternoon to get patches, etc.

Directors,
Please read the following very carefully. There is a PDF version below that you can print.
FRIDAY – AUDITION – North Crowley HS – 9100 S. Hulen, Fort Worth, TX 76123
Let me know immediately if you have anyone not participating in the audition!!
- Make sure students and parents understand and will abide by the cell phone/electronics rules!!
- Every school must have a chaperone. If you can’t find a parent, talk to administrators and teachers.
Host Information
- Enter on the north side of the building. Students will enter the auditorium. Directors will proceed past that entrance, through the picnic area and into the building. We will meet in the library, which is up the stairs on the left. There is also an elevator just past those stairs in the hall to the right.
- Cars and vans can park in the teacher lot on the north side. Buses should use the part of the lot that is further from the building – marching band practice area.
- We will need a few parents to help as monitors.
- Director food – Dinner should be ready when you arrive. We will have “Fancy Nachos” – the load ‘em up yourself type. Snacks will come around during the audition as well.
- There will be a student concession area in the cafeteria after students audition – pizza, nachos, and candy. Water can be bought before in the auditorium.
- Alternates who are at the audition but are not called to sing will accompany the singers to the holding area in case someone becomes ill and has to leave. If they were to go to the cafeteria, they could no longer be called to audition.
- Try not to arrive before 3:00 since school is still in session until 4:00.
The Procedure
- Students will register, receive cuts, and warm up in the auditorium.
- After singing through the cuts, all singers will be taken to holding rooms at the same time. They will be escorted from that room to warm up rooms in small groups.
- Singers will go to one audition room to sing the cuts. There will be 4 singing rooms. 2nd parts will audition first, followed by 1st.
- As students finish the music, they will be taken to a separate sight-reading room. There will be one SR room for Soprano/Tenor and another for Alto/Bass.
- The cafeteria is the post-audition holding area.
- We will also rehearse “Set Down Servant” a little after the audition, so please make sure your students bring that music.
- We usually finish around 8:00, but you know that there is a lot of variation from year to year.
- Students will take all their stuff with them from point to point. No swimming back up-stream!
